Intego’s Virus Barrier May Cause Issues with TimeNet

Just a quick heads up — Intego’s Virus Barrier software may cause conflicts with TimeNet and TimeNet Law. It also has been known to cause Kernel Panics (OS X crashes) and conflicts with other software. Other Mac developers have been reporting this as well.

Quite a few emails in the last few weeks of people saying TimeNet / TimeNet Law was crashing or behaving strangely. It turns out when you disable/delete Virus Barrier, the problem goes away.

Another solution is to add the application & the data folder to the “Trusted Files” within VB X6.

New Website + TimeNet Law Control Center

We have just launched a new website design, you can see it in action at http://www.applesource.biz

I’d love your feedback on the new design!

TimeNet Law Control Center is also now officially available. It is a separate application that you can use to control what users can and cannot do in TimeNet Law. There are also client-specific permissions and report-specific permissions. TimeNet Law Control Center also allows you to view your TimeNet Law Audit Database – track all changes in the system, when the change occurred and who the change was made by. For more information, check out the new TimeNet Law page: http://timenetlaw.com

TimeNet Law is also moving into a new tiered pricing structure. This allows you to custom-build a system that will work exactly how you need to to. You only pay for the features you need.

Because of the massive efforts that have gone into TimeNet Law in the last couple of years, we are planning to announce the new pricing structure on February 15th.

If you’re on the fence about purchasing TimeNet Law, now is the time to do so! All existing TimeNet Law users will be grandfathered in to the Billing & Payments Module and the Reporting Module. There will be more information on the pricing and availability of TimeNet Law modules announced on February 15th, so in the meantime take a look at the new TimeNet Law page and get a hint of some exciting new features, including Task Code Billing/E-Billing Compatibility and the all new Control Center.

TimeNet Law 2.3

It’s been awhile since our last post. TimeNet Law has come a long, long way in the last year.

What’s New in TimeNet Law

Robust Reporting
– See how much time has been logged today, or yesterday, or last week with the Slip Analysis Report. Get a concise overview of your firm’s time.

– Keep clients happy with easy to read Credit Reports and Invoice Summaries that provide clear breakdowns of time spent and money collected & applied.

– Completely customizable Client Report shows you all of the data you need and nothing you don’t. See this data plotted on a bar graph for even greater visual coherency. Double-click any column to see a matter-by-matter breakdown of the data that encompasses that figure.

– Many more reports provide you with all the data you need: Statement of Account Report, Aged A/R Report, Net Investment Report, Billed/Unbilled Fees & Disbursements Reports, Trust/Escrow/Unapplied Credits Reports and more.

Powerful Tracking of Fund Accounts
TimeNet Law now allows you to store funds in client level accounts or matter level accounts. This makes organizing funds and grouping vendors and persons responsible for payment very simple. TimeNet Law also has a new Unapplied Credits fund (both at the client and matter level) to allow you to store funds in a general retainer account.

Funds can be deposited into these accounts and then applied to invoice balances manually or automatically. Detailed Credit Reports show you exactly how the funds were deposited and applied out, even showing how much (if any) is left from each payment.

Task Code Billing
Task Code is a new setting that can be applied at the client or matter level. Once Task Code Billing is enabled, slips added to the matter must be selected from pre-defined lists. This uniform list allows for compatibility with Electronic Billing services, and also simplifies entering tasks and expenses while cutting down on user entry errors.

TimeNet Law currently has four categories to choose tasks from:
Project Task Codes
Litigation Task Codes
TradeMark Task Codes
Patent Task Codes

When entering charges, the list is broken into subcategories so you can easily make your selection. Here is the Litigation Task Code Set:

Other New Features
TimeNet Law has many additional features, too many to list them all. Here are some highlights:

– Each matter has 4 custom fields for information that must be shown on invoices
– Ability to show clients sorted by last name
– Ability to track and show Timekeeper IDs
– Timekeeper Summary option for invoices
– Create Group listings under each client and subcategorize matters into those groups

More to Comethe standard in legal billing and accounting.

Time and Billing, Meet Your Long Lost Brother, Accounting

TimeNet Law is on the move. Hot on the heels of TimeNet Law 2.0, which brought conflict of interest checking, interface refinements and a bunch of other new features and fixes, TimeNet Law 2.1 came out. TimeNet Law 2.1 was primarily a data switch-over to allow for advanced tracking of invoicing and differentiating between work in progress and billed work. We snuck in a few extra features and reports with this update as well.

Well now that that’s all out of the way, TimeNet Law 2.2 is coming out. Now you can finally see why all of these changes were necessary: Accounting.

For some firms, these features aren’t so important, but they should be. Maybe you use a Windows application for accounting. Maybe you use QuickBooks. Regardless, running reports and providing your CPAs and banks with up to date and useful information is critical, no matter how big or small your firm is.

If you have an accounting system in place that you’re dead-set on, that’s great; just ignore the mark down, write-off, and grouping features of this update, and still enjoy the benefits of advanced reporting. However, if you want to ditch that Windows application or consolidate your tools, TimeNet Law can practically run the accounting department for your law firm.

Here’s how:

1. Matter Groups. Now, you can organize Matters by grouping and relate items to one another. This allows for streamlined billing and reports. Run bills for one group at a time, organizing them however you like. All kinds of TimeNet Law reports will show these groups for easy sorting and data gathering. Quickly see, for example, how much money a specific group has made your firm.

2. Disbursements. “Additional Charges” were always meant to be disbursements, or expenses, added to a Matter. Now, you can see these charges broken up and separated from Earnings charges (timed slips and flat fee slips). See exactly how much of your income comes from Timekeepers and how much comes from Disbursements.

3. Mark Downs and Write-Offs. A Mark Down occurs before the client even sees the invoice. Bill for your time, and when it’s time to invoice, you can view all kinds of Timekeeper reports to see how people are spending their time. If you decide that a certain task had more time spent on it than seems reasonable, a mark down can be made to the slip. This mark down occurs before the slip is invoiced and the client never sees this unless you choose.

Write-Offs are exactly the same, but are logged AFTER a slip has been invoiced. If, for example, a client disputes an item and says they won’t pay that much, you need to keep track of this as a Write-Off.

Mark Down and Write-Off Reports can be generated to show your clients exactly how much they have saved over time, if they are complaining too much about fees.

4. Advanced Timekeeper Reports. Keep track of how much a Timekeeper billed, how much they spent, how much was marked down, how much was written off, and what the actual collections were down to the Matter level.

5. Reports, reports, and more reports. Billed Fees and Disbursements, Unbilled Fees and Disbursements, Statement of Account, Aged A/R, Collections, Mark Downs, Write-Offs, and more.

6. Exporting. If you need data organized or grouped in a way that TimeNet Law doesn’t have built-in, every report now has the option to Export to a comma-delimited CSV file. These files can be quickly imported into Numbers or Excel and manipulated further.

TimeNet Law 2.2 should be released within just a few days. Once it has been released, we invite you to explore the new accounting features. If anything is missing, let us know what we need to add to handle all of your accounting needs!
